Wellness:

Coaching is a skill-set and approach to aiding someone with self improvement.

There are different coaching models, each with different scope of subject. For example, “Life” coaching is different from “Wellness” coaching in that it might include areas of career and money for example.

Health and Wellbeing is a subset of Life Coaching. Hormesis Health and Fitness focuses primarily on Health and Wellbeing (12 Dimensions of Wellness) and the subset of “Physical Wellness”.

The “Illness - Wellness Continuum” creates a framework for understanding Wellness relative to our current concepts of Health.

Wellness is very different from “disease management”. The mitigation of disease symptoms does not translate to “health” or “wellness”.

“There is more to health than the absence of disease”
— Halbert L. Dunn, M.D. (1896-1975) -

Many people have yet to know what health or wellness is. Like with many things, “we don’t know about, what we don’t know”.

Awareness, exploration, learning and evaluation/reflection are a few aspects of bringing us to a “growth mindset” leading us to greater wellness. A client may come forward with a specific area of wellness interest based on their current awareness to only find that during their personal growth, their scope of improvement expands to other wellness areas. Other clients may come forward with a general mindset to improve wellness needing to discover areas to work on.

Wellness areas are “interdependent” by the way. For example, a person seeking to improve body composition as the initial focus, and who also has chronic stress, will ultimately find themselves needing to focus on stress to make improvement.

If for the moment we generalize and suggest that most people want to “feel good and look good” we would find that having plenty of energy during their day would be a tangible goal that ultimately needs the help of nutrition, exercise, sleep and appropriate daily routines supporting our evolutionary circadian rhythm.
